Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Double-eye leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. One end of this spring will attach directly to the hanger with a suspension bolt. The other end will attach to shackle straps that are suspended from a hanger. These straps allow the spring to move and pivot so that it can better compensate for uneven pavement. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the shackle straps will be attached to the equalizer that connects multiple springs.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, shackle straps, and suspension bolts. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer. You should, however, replace your shackle straps because they are usually the first component to wear out. You may choose to replace old suspension bolts as well. It is recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

  • Trailer Leaf Springs Rated Slightly Higher Than 4,400 lb Axle
Hi Todd, To go with trailer leaf springs that are slightly stiffer than the 4,400 lb rating of your axle you can go with 4,500 lb springs or 5,000 lb springs. The right one is going to depend on the length of your current springs though, as you'll need to measure from center eye to center eye of your springs to get the right length. You'll want to measure with the trailer jacked up and no weight on the springs if you can, and since leaf springs flatten out a bit over time, you can go...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs for a Vintage Camper
With how long your current springs are, you will have replace the hangers for the springs to attach to. That being said, this does happen sometimes and it is not the end of the world. The 6-Leaf Double Eye Spring # e27SR will have a length of 26 inches from eye to eye, so you will also need the # APS2 hanger kit. This will cover both hangers on both sides, so you will need no other parts to get this system up and running.

  • Attaching Shackle Bolts and Spring Hangers to Utility Trailer
It makes no difference which direction the shackle nut or bolt head is facing. The bolt is not driven in, when the shackle bolts are tightened, the knurled portion of the bolt will be drawn into place. Make sure you use a lock nut, and snug it down then back it off about 1/4 turn so the shackles will not bind. If you use a wet shackle bolt with a grease zerk, you will want the zerk facing the outboard side of the trailer for easy access. The movement of the suspension will make it almost...

  • What Causes Trailer Leaf Springs To Break Continuously
Yes, leaf springs must be replaced in pairs which is why one side left go and then the other shortly after. In regards to the stent you get on a full set of leaf springs, there are really a ton of variables present here so it is hard to predict. However, if you are a full-timer then odds are your trailer is going to be subjected to harder conditions and most likely more weight than the average trailer therefore your suspension components will wear faster. I have attached our leaf spring...

  • 4,500 lb Leaf Spring Recommendations for a Dual Axle Trailer
Generally speaking, the heavier the spring rate the rougher the ride will be when unloaded. That is the sacrifice that gets made when you go to a spring that will allow you to have a higher towing capacity. If you are concerned about ride quality and are positive that the trailer will never see more than 9,000 lbs then leaf springs # e27SR would be a good choice for you. Regardless of the springs you choose, you will be limited by the lowest rated component of your trailer. So if the...

  • Is There A More Robust 26" Long Leaf Spring To Use In Place Of e22YR?
Hello again, Doug. The # e22YR spring is for a 4,000 lb axle, so technically this is already more robust than what would typically be used with your axle. If you want to bump up the capacity even farther, we do have the # e27SR spring which is 26" long and is for a 4,500 lb axle. Should be a bit more durable than what you have now, and it will fit into your suspension. Your spring breaking like that is a bit worrisome. Usually when we see this happen repeatedly it is because the springs...

The best option for a trailer leaf spring replacement would be the 4-leaf 4,000 lb axle leaf spring part # e27SR. For a tandem lift kit you'd want the Lippert # RR23QX. For hub drums to convert to a 6 lug wheel you'd want the part # 84656UC3-EZ which is correct for 3,500 lb axles so that you could install a tire and wheel in the size of 225/75R15 Load Range D like the # AM32664.

  • Correct Leaf Spring for Trailer with Lippert 3,500 lb Axle
Thank you for the photo! I was able to use the serial number on your axle to determine which is the correct replacement leaf spring for your trailer. For this, you are going to want to use the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e57SR. The measurement you provided of 26" long is correct but the leaf spring needs to be measured while unloaded as it will lengthen while a load is present. If you were to take the leaf spring off of the trailer it would measure 25-1/4" unless badly worn. I don't recommend...

The typical springs for the AL-KO 4,400 axles are one of two lengths. If you have the 25-1/4 inch length, then you will want the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 5,000-lb Trailer Axles # e28SR, but if you have the 26 inch springs, you will want the 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,500-lb Trailer Axles # e27SR. The 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,500-lb Trailer Axles - 26" Long # e27SR will be the closest fit for your 3750 lb axle. Having leaf springs rated slightly higher is normal because you will be limited in capacity by the weakest component on your trailer and normally you want that to be your axle. These springs will not be too strong for that axle as to cause too firm a ride.

If the leaf springs are located under the axle then adding leaves will lower the trailer whereas if they are mounted on top of the axle then adding leaves will raise the trailer. • What Leaf Springs Do I Need For 1998 Roadrunner Trailer?
Hello Abel, thanks for reaching out. So leaf springs can flatten out and flex up to 1" longer than the original measurement. I do not think your springs were originally 25-1/4". It is more likely they were around 26" originally. Replacing a 3-leaf spring with a 4-leaf will lift the trailer a tiny bit higher, but you are talking about only 3/8" or the thickness of one leaf. As far as recommending a spring, I will need to know the weight capacity of your axle. For example, the 4-Leaf...

  • Replacement 26" Long Leaf Spring for a Boat Trailer
Hey Mel. How did you get the 26-1/4" measurement on your current leaf springs? If the weight of the boat and trailer was still on the suspension they're probably going to be closer to 26" long if not shorter. Leaf springs like to stretch out after years of use and the only way to get an accurate measurement is to lift one side of your trailer up or take a measurement from the center of the spring eye to the center pin on the leaf spring along the curve( measurement B in that attached image)....
